If you’re familiar with the “Michigan Mitten,” the easiest way to describe the location of Sanilac County is to say that it is on the outside (east side) of the Thumb that juts into Lake Huron. According to local legend, the county is named after a Wyandotte Indian Chief named Sanilac. You can go on a pony ride or hayride, have a photo taken in historic costumes, and even pan for “gold” that can be traded in at the General Store for prizes. To the west, in Brown City, the Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary lets you walk on the wild side. This non-profit exotic animal rescue lets you see a variety of animals up close, from tigers to alligators to bears, and much more! Each animal has an amazing story of how it came to be a part of the sanctuary, and entry fees go toward the care of the animals.
Wine and Dine
If you are looking to Lake Huron to provide a romantic setting, Sanilac County has that, too. A tour of local wineries will set the mood nicely. Blue Water Winery, in Carsonville, offers tours of the vineyard and tastings of the wines and microbrews (the chardonnay is a visitor favorite), along with live music several evenings a week. 3 North Vines, in Croswell, hosts music and art shows, and they serve the best sangria. For live entertainment, check the events schedule for the Lexington Village Theater. They host musicians, comedians, and a variety of other acts; recent headliners include Lone Star, Taylor Hicks, and The Glenn Miller Orchestra. You can finish off your evening with dinner at Uri’s Landing in Port Sanilac. This chef-driven American fusion restaurant focuses on farm-to-table dining, featuring ingredients from local farms and their own homestead farm’s poultry, eggs, and produce.
