Copco Lake Information

Copco Lake is located about 30 miles northeast of Yreka just south of the Oregon border. The serenity of the area is enjoyed by many local residents as well as part-time vacationers who come to enjoy its tranquility. Copco Lake is a beautiful lake located about 30 miles northeast of Yreka, California just south of the Oregon border. It is an artificial lake formed in 1917 upon the completion of the Copco Dam on the Klamath River. It has a surface area of 1000 acres and contains 77,000 acre-feet of water. At one time the river just below the dam was 130 feet above its present bed and water backed up 5 miles and formed a natural lake which varied in width and was a mile at its widest part. The elevation of the lake is about 2700 feet. The area around the lake was subdivided in the 60's and there are currently about 150 homes around the lake. The Fire Stations, the Community Center and the Copco Lake Store were built in the 70's.

Copco Lake
Fishing Information

Fishing on the river is excellent. The Klamath River has been designated a Wild Trout River from the Oregon border to Copco Lake and trout fishing on the river has been excellent over the years. The California Department of Fish and Game and Pacific Power and Light have provided 6 public access points with ample parking.

A wide variety of fish are found in the lake with the most common being trout, perch, bass, and catfish.

Fishing from the shore or trolling at the upper end of the lake can usually land a good size Rainbow Trout. Trout are generally caught in the 1 to 6 pound range.

The lake has an almost unlimited population of yellow perch. Perch can usually be found in any location and are easy to catch. Perch do, however travel in schools and it is sometimes necessary to change your fishing location until you find another school. They are commonly caught in the 5 to 12 inch range.

Also present in Copco Lake are largemouth bass. Most taken are in the 1 to 3 pound range, even though 5 to 6 pound fish have been heard of.

Catfish (brown bullhead) can also be caught at the lake after dark. Any of the catfish baits or night crawlers have always been very successful.
