Lake Pokegama
Fishing Information

MJB Country Store (Fishing Bait & Tackle) 320-629-3807, Pine City, MN 55063

The fish population in this lake includes Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers. With 494 surface acres and a maximum depth of 19 feet, Pokegama Lake is a very popular fishing lake. A soft water drainage lake in the Chetek Chain between Ojaski Lake and Lake Chetek, the immediate lakeshore vegetation is pine and hardwood with the exception of several marsh-edged bays. The lake is home to some of north’s finest walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass fishing. Several seasonal county records have been caught from our waters. Other species caught in plentiful numbers are crappie, blue gill, largemouth bass, rock bass, sunfish, and perch. The public landing is only 1/2 mile from the resort.

By far the most sought after game fish in Minnesota, the Walleye are plentiful in Pokegama. Many nice stringers have been taken by quests at Southwood not to mention a large number of wall hangers. One of the most popular areas to find Walleye are the drop-offs just in front of the resort. The Wendigo arm of Lake Pokegama offers outstanding structure that harbor the Walleye. On top of the already abundant Walleye population in the lake, the DNR stocked large numbers of Walleye in the fall of 2002. Lake Pokegama is primarily a nighttime Walleye lake which makes for a enjoyable evening on the water. Mornings are also a productive time to catch the elusive Walleye.

Lake Pokegama is well known for it’s lunker Northern Pike. Many area seasonal records have been taken from our lake. There have been many trophy sized northerns taken by our guests at Southwood Resort. Five too seven pound northerns are very common, but hook into a large water wolf and hang on for the time of your life. Many large northerns are also taken by spear fishermen from dark houses just in front of our beach every winter. Pokegama is an outstanding northern lake throughout the year, but come to Southwood in September and October and take advantage of the feeding frenzy of these monster pike. While Northern Pike and Walleye might be the two most popular of northern Minnesota’s game fish, the bronze back or Small Mouth Bass, pound for pound are the best scrappers of all game fish. You will find some of the best Small Mouth fishing in northern Minnesota here on Lake Pokegama. One of the lakes' most productive areas for small mouth are the bull rushes off the end of our dock. Small mouth can be caught throughout the year, but the very best time to catch these lunkers is early to mid-June. All of these smallmouth were caught in front of or near Southwood's. The panfishing on Lake Pokegama is the best around. You can catch some of the nicest bluegills, sunnies, perch, and slab crappie on the Windigo arm of Lake Pokegama. The bull rushes off the end of our docks provide some of the finest panfishing action on the lake.

These marshes are home to many muskrats and puddle ducks. Keep your eyes peeled when cruising along the shorelines, as the lake is a popular watering hole for deer and other wildlife. Another sight becoming more common each year are Bald Eagles soaring above the lakes, catching fish to feed themselves and their young.

The City of Chetek is a thriving community of around 2,000 year-round residents, plus at least that many more that reside around the shores of our lakes. The city itself has excellent educational and health care facilities, churches of many denominations, a strong industrial base plus retail trade area. And if it can't be found in Chetek, our location in northwestern Wisconsin puts us less than an hour away from more metropolitan surroundings.

The prime attraction to Chetek is, of course, our fabulous Chetek Chain of Six Lakes - Chetek Lake, Prairie Lake, Pokegama Lake, Ojaski Lake, Ten Mile Lake and Moose Ear Lake. All together these lakes cover some 3,800 surface acres with over 120 miles of shoreline, dotted with islands and many quiet bays. People come to these lakes annually to fish, to swim, to sun, in short, to just enjoy all that such a tremendous resource as these lakes have to offer.
