Trout Lake - St. Cloud County Information

Lying five miles to the East of the city of St. Cloud and approximately 30 minutes from Disney World, the seven key lakes, which form the Alligator Chain, are easily accessible. In fact, the local main thoroughfare, Highway 192/441, actually splits the chain in half as it runs from St. Cloud to Melbourne. However, few passersby even realize the lakes are there, in that only a very brief glimpse of the broad expanses of blue-green waters on either side of the highway can be seen from that vantage point. The waters are clean and pure, with no pollution from sewage or agriculture. And, the scenery and wildlife provide a quality outdoor experience.

Trout Lake is a popular recreational spot in Saint Cloud, Florida, known for its scenic beauty and various outdoor activities. Here’s an overview of the lake concerning fishing and boating:

Fishing
- Fish Species: Trout Lake is home to several freshwater fish species, including bass (largemouth and some others), bluegill, crappie, and catfish. The lake's ecosystem supports a good population of these fish, making it a favored spot for anglers.
- Fishing Regulations: It’s essential to check local regulations and guidelines, including catch limits and seasonal restrictions, as they can change and may vary by species.
- Public Access: There may be designated areas for bank fishing, and boaters can fish directly from their vessels.

Boating
- Types of Watercraft: Trout Lake is suitable for various types of boats, including kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and motorboats. Be sure to adhere to any local boating regulations, including speed limits and no-wake zones.
- Launch Areas: There may be public boat ramps and access points to enter the lake. It's advisable to check with local parks or recreation departments for information on boat ramps and facilities.
- Safety: As with any water activities, life jackets and safety equipment should be used at all times, and boaters should be aware of weather conditions before heading out.

Recreation and Amenities
- Parks and Trails: Surrounding areas often have parks, walking trails, and picnic spots. This makes it a great place for a family outing, whether for fishing, boating, or simply enjoying nature.
- Wildlife Watching: The area around Trout Lake may have diverse wildlife, so visitors can enjoy birdwatching and viewing other local fauna.

Tips
- Best Times to Fish: Early morning and late evening are typically the best times for fishing, as fish are more active during these cooler parts of the day.
- Licenses: If you intend to fish, make sure to acquire a valid Florida fishing license, which can often be purchased online or at local vendors.

Fishing Information

Trout Lake has a lot of potential, especially for bass angling. The narrow southeast corner is heavily vegetated and very fertile. It is an excellent place for fishing live shiners during the cooler months and for 'flipping' plastic worms during the summer season.

A Johnson spoon or a floating worm rig should do well in the early spring. Thin grasses are found in the west and southwest portions, with heavy growth reappearing on the north side. The northwest section is the deepest part of Trout Lake, with some fairly steep slopes in places. A few shell beds may be found on some of these sloping areas. Look for bass to use the shell beds, particularly during the period immediately after the spawn. Some sparse, underwater grass beds will also be found here. They can be located by using a depth sounder and watching for their growth in 6-8 feet of water.

The mouths of the short connecting canals can be productive for bass, particularly if recent rains have created moving water conditions. Speckled perch will be found in the open water areas of the northwest, near the deepest sections. Drifting live minnows is the best approach.
