Petenwell Lake Information

Petenwell Lake is one of the largest lakes in Wisconsin, located in the central part of the state near Nekoosa. It is part of the Wisconsin River system and offers a variety of recreational activities, including fishing and boating. Wisconsin's Second Largest Lake at 23,000 acres of water (36 square miles of water) and over 100 miles of shoreline. Lake Petenwell is so large that is covers portions of three Wisconsin counties including Adams, Juneau, and Wood County. The Juneau County side of the lake is the most sought after by land buyers with its sandy shoreline, gentle elevations, incredible views, and beautiful homes. The lake offers some of the best sailing, fishing, boating, and water sport opportunities in the Midwest! The lake is known for game fishing including Musky, Walleye, and Bass.

General Information:
- Size: Approximately 23,000 acres, making it the second-largest lake in Wisconsin.
- Depth: The lake has a maximum depth of around 44 feet.
- Type: It is a flowage lake, meaning it is formed by damming the river, influencing its habitat and species. Much of the shoreline around the lake is owned by a power company and will not be developed. Private lakefront property is very limited on Lake Petenwell. Because of the limited private property on the lake, the lake has very little boat traffic even on the busiest of summer holidays. Sailing is a popular activity on the lake and the lake is generally calm enough to offer beautiful canoeing and kayaking. Of course, the lake is big enough and deep enough to offer great opportunities for power boating. With over 100 miles of shoreline, many families enjoy relaxing trips on pontoon boats around the lake. Numerous professional fishing guides operate on Lake Petenwell and offer trophy Musky and Walleye fishing excursions.

Fishing:
Petenwell Lake is known for its diverse fishing opportunities. The lake hosts a variety of fish species, including:
- Walleye: Popular among anglers, especially during the spring and fall.
- Muskellunge: The lake is home to some trophy-sized musky.
- Northern Pike: Commonly found throughout the lake.
- Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass: Both species can be caught, offering varied angling experiences.
- Panfish: Species such as crappie and bluegill are also abundant.

Fishing Tips:
- Best Times: Early morning and late evening are often the best times for fishing.
- Seasonal Changes: Pay attention to seasonal patterns; for instance, walleye fishing is particularly good during their spawning season in spring.
- Bait and Tackle: Live bait (such as minnows or worms) and artificial lures can both be effective.

Boating:
Petenwell Lake is popular for boating and water sports, providing plenty of opportunities to enjoy the large expanse of water. Here are some considerations for boating on the lake:

- Boat Ramps: Several public boat launches are available for easy access to the lake; some are situated in parks or recreational areas.
- Types of Boating: The lake allows for various types of boating, including powerboating, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing.
- Water Sports: Besides leisure boating, the lake is suitable for jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and fishing from a boat.
- Safety: Always follow local boating regulations, wear life jackets, and be cautious of other watercraft.

Other Recreational Activities:
- Camping: There are campgrounds around the lake for those who want to immerse themselves in nature.
- Bird Watching: The diverse habitats around the lake attract various bird species.
- Hiking and Nature Trails: Explore the nearby natural areas for more outdoor enjoyment.

Local Amenities:
- Lodging and Restaurants: Nekoosa and nearby towns offer accommodations and dining options, including hotels, motels, and local eateries.
- Navigation: It’s helpful to have a map or GPS for navigating the lake and nearby regions.
