Bull Shoals Lake Information

Look to Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas if you’re interested in lake homes for sale. Since 1951, Bull Shoals Lake has had the proud reputation of being an unspoiled oasis where the majesty of the Ozarks is presented for all to enjoy and preserve. The integrity and functionality of the lake are continually maintained, ensuring that you can make the most of your Bull Shoals Lake experience year-round.

Bull Shoals Lake spans across an impressive 45,500 acres of surface and boasts 1,000 miles of untamed shoreline. It’s an angler’s paradise, as the lake’s edge twists and turns into hundreds of coves and inlets. Largemouth bass fishing is popular on the lake, and the fish have been known to reach up to 12 pounds. Walleye, bream, catfish, and crappie are also hunted in large numbers, especially since night fishing is a popular Bull Shoals Lake pastime. Similarly, trout fishing is supreme in the icy waters that flow downstream from the lake’s namesake dam. And when other lakes become still with the onset of winter weather, the waters of Bull Shoals come to life—the winter fishing begins in November with the placement of pine tree attractors for the crappie.

Bull Shoals Lake was designed with lake-goers in mind, and it continues to push the envelope when it comes to recreation opportunities and accommodations. 60,000 acres of land were allocated for public access, translating into 20 parks outfitted with camping and picnic facilities. Several commercial boat docks are also positioned around the lake to serve all your water sport needs. In addition to motor boating, sail boating, jet skiing, and rafting, scuba diving is also a big draw, since the lake’s waters are so pristine. Lake properties for sale on Bull Shoals Lake are treated to mile upon mile of untouched beach that gives way to crystal-clear waters.

Not only is Bull Shoals Lake encircled by wonderful outdoor accommodations, it’s also surrounded by some of the state’s finest golf courses. You can test the fairways of courses such as Diamond Hills, Big Creek, Rivercliff, Taneycomo, and Harrison Country Club. If you’d like to live on a Bull Shoals Lake golf course, please visit GolfHomes.com for property listings. Lake-view properties enjoy spectacular scenic views all year long. After all, the natural wonder and beauty of the Ozark Mountains is everywhere. Everyone appreciates the stunning topography of the region, and Bull Shoals recognizes its unique position by celebrating its surroundings. The annual art show highlights art of various mediums and is always dominated by larger-than-life landscapes and snapshots of nature.

Bull Shoals Lake, located in both Missouri and Arkansas, is not only a very popular attraction for fans of the outdoors, but also houses a dam that is the fifth largest of its kind in the United States. The lake resides on the White River, roughly 60 miles south of Springfield, Missouri and around 170 miles north of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Bull Shoals can cover more than 71,000 acres at flood control levels, and 45,440 acres at conservation pool elevation. Besides being an impoundment of the White River, Tributaries for Bull Shoals include Little North Fork, Howard, East and West Sugarloaf, Bear, Jimmie, Bee, Big, Beaver and Swan creeks. Water flows through the dam and feeds the lower White River. Elevation of the lake ranges from 695 feet at top of flood control to 654 feet at top of conservation pool. Bull Shoals' limestone shorelines can range from 740 to 1050 miles depending on water height. The clear blue water of Bull Shoals attracts scuba divers and spear fishers from many states.

HISTORY: Construction of the dam that forms Bull Shoals Lake was started in 1947 and completed in 1953. It can be found 7 miles north of Cotter, Arkansas. In 1952, commercial generation began on Bull Shoals, with the powerhouse and switchyard finishing construction in 1953. The final two generation units were installed in December of 1963, completing construction at an estimated cost of $86,000,000. Bull Shoals is one of four multiple purpose projects constructed in the upper White River Basin, along with Norfork, Table Rock, and Beaver Lake, for the control of floods and the generation of hydro electric power.
