Lake Limestone Information

Built in 1978 as a water supply reservoir, Lake Limestone is a body of water managed by the Brazos River Authority, which controls the Brazos River, the longest river in Texas. Not actually a part of the Brazos River, Limestone runs along the Navasota River. Nevertheless, Lake Limestone lies in the Brazos River Basin, which covers around 840 miles of beautiful central Texas countryside.

Beyond its duties of providing water to Texas residents, the lake is open for human recreational activities all year long. Lake Limestone covers about 13,000 acres and provides ample opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, tubing, and jet skiing, which are among the many activities that lake home owners enjoy regularly. Around the lake, there are marinas with a reputation for owners who will take care of Limestone boaters time and again. The Running Branch Marina and Lake Limestone are both well loved as homes for lake residents' watercraft.

The lake is also one of the best in central Texas for fishing opportunities. Lakefront cabins for sale are located in the middle of a hotspot for fishing crappie and white bass, among other species of fish. Lake Limestone’s location outside of mainstream Texas recreation makes it a rare treasure for fishermen as well. The lack of competition and the peaceful solitude fishers can find on the lake combine to make Limestone a particular source of delight. Springtime lake residents find success with spawning fish, but all kinds of fish can be found in the lake year-round, partially because of the varied aquatic habitat. The 16 miles of shoreline is rife with brush, hills, and plants that attract plenty of aquatic life.

Golfers can play a fun and challenging round in nearby towns like Franklin, Teague, and Limestone. The Oak Grove Country Club, Big Cedar Country Club, and Mexia Country Club all offer fully equipped golf courses that are a short drive away from the lake. Anyone interested in living just off the golfing green can find more information at GolfHomes.com.

There are plenty of other places to go that are not far from the lake. The lake is south of Groesbeck, Texas, and it reaches into three Texas counties: Leon, Limestone, and Robertson, but the majority of the lake’s area is in Limestone county. Waterfront living near the lake puts you within a few hours of Texas’s main metropolitan areas, including Austin, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and Houston.

Centrally located Lake Limestone offers plenty of boating, fishing, and golf to attract the interest of anyone looking for a lake-view home for sale. Sitting off the well-traveled path, Lake Limestone is central Texas’s best-kept secret.

Lake Limestone is located 15 miles southeast of Groesbeck on Farm road 3371 in Leon County. On upper Navasota River, impounded by Sterling C. Robertson Dam, Lake Limestone's normal surface area is 14,200 acres, and is approximately 16 miles long, but lake level is variable depending on rainfall and water use. Major water customers are Texas utilities generating plants. Recreational facilities include boat ramps, primitive camping areas, boating, fishing for bass, crappie, catfish and panfish. Accessible from Groesbeck via FM 937; also accessible from Buffalo and Centerville.

Lake Limestone
Fishing Information

Lake Limestone in Leon, Limestone and Robertson counties comprises all impounded waters of the Navasota River from the Lake Limestone dam upstream to the Fort Parker State Park Lake dam.

Types of Fish: Largemouth bass, native, Florida Largemouth bass, Smallmouth bass, Channel catfish, Hybrid Striped bass, Blue Catfish, White Crappie, and a variety of smaller Sunfishes and other forage fish.

This reservoir provides a cooling plant for local electric generation plants. The water is slightly alkaline, moderately clear and the lake has an irregular shoreline, brush, timber, and aquatic plants which supply good fish habitat.

Good spinnerbait, crankbait, and Carolina-rig fishing can be found in areas of timber, creek channels, and grass. Brightly colored baits work best like fire tiger, white, and chartreuse as the lake is off-colored much of the year.
