Lake Martin
Set your sights on Lake Martin, in central Alabama, if you’re interested in lake homes for sale. Built in 1926, Lake Martin was once the largest man-made lake in the country, and it is still known as one of the finest. Lake Martin is surrounded by Elmore, Coosa, and Tallapoosa Counties and attracts lake-goers from as far as Atlanta, Georgia with its vastness and exceptional diversity of recreation opportunities.
It’s difficult to convey the sheer size of Lake Martin. Boasting more than 700 miles of wooded shoreline, the lake spans approximately 40,000 acres. Another wonder of the lake is that its waters are incredibly clean. Water visibility has been known to reach down to 15 feet in some areas. This makes for some tricky fishing, as the lake’s depth also reaches 150 feet. Anglers are always up to the challenge, though, and gladly bait their lines for the lake’s healthy populations of bluegill, catfish, crappie, and sunfish, in addition to striped, spotted, and white bass. In the summer, serious anglers prefer to fish at night when the waters are more settled. And surprising to some, Lake Martin is actually known as one of the finest winter bass fishing destinations in the state.
There are plenty of other reasons besides fishing to test out the waters. Lake Martin’s natural sand beaches beckon sun bathers to spread out their towels, while the lake’s complex topography and array of spectacular landmarks draw many more to the water. Play in a boat, on a jet ski, or in a raft, and swim to your heart’s content. And while you’re at it, search out Chimney Rock Island, not to be confused with Acapulco Rock Island. If you feel like butting heads with some frisky locals, make your way to the aptly named Goat Island, where one family of goats planted roots years ago and hasn’t left since. No matter how or where you’d like to spend your time on Lake Martin, several public marinas and facilities are open to serve your needs.
Lake properties for sale are scattered around Lake Martin’s edge and enjoy premium access to the area’s many accommodations. Recreation and boat access points include Smith Landing, Wind Creek State Park, Madwind Creek, and Pace’s Point. Similarly, lake-view properties are also situated near many top-notch golf courses. The Auburn University Club, Hatchet Creek Golf Club, and Lake Winds Golf Course are open to the public, while Willow Point Country Club is a prestigious private course that features Lake Martin as its most prominent obstacle. If you’d like to live on a lake Martin golf course, visit GolfHomes.com for listings and details.
AquaPalooza is the largest boating event in the world and draws in bigger and better music headliners each year. And of course, the lake’s Independence Day fireworks show is the most impressive one around. Everything about Lake Martin is a little bigger and better!
Lake Martin is located on the Tallapoosa River in central Alabama. It has 743 miles of wooded shore line and 40,000 acres of surface area. Martin Dam was built by Alabama Power in 1926 as a power generating plant. Today Lake Martin is a water playground used for all types of water recreation. |
