Lake Oconee
Partway along the 220-mile-long stream of Georgia’s Oconee River and halfway between the cities of Augusta and Atlanta, you’ll find Lake Oconee: a veritable oasis of peaceful landscapes and opportunities for recreation. With plenty of fishing, golfing, and other fun sports and activities, Oconee is the ultimate property for lake home owners.
Formed in 1979 as a result of a dam on the Oconee River, Lake Oconee is located just south of the beautiful Oconee National Forest. It is one of the newer lakes that spots Georgia’s southern terrain. It’s also the largest. Its oblong body holds more than 19,000 acres of pristine water. Those with a lake-view cabin are steps away from a veritable heaven for fishing. Every acre of water at Oconee is home to plenty of fish, including catfish, crappie, bream, and several varieties of bass, especially largemouth bass. Approximately ten percent of the fish populating the water are largemouth bass, making this lake a prime destination for bass fishers. The lake’s sand bars and hundreds of docks make for great hiding and staging hangouts for the fish that populate the lake so densely. Fishing competitions large and small are held year-round, including two of the bigger ones, Berry's Tournament Series and the R&R Outdoor Promotions Tournament Trail.
Hidden in small communities nearby the lake are beautiful golf courses. The Greene County Chamber of Commerce hosts acres of golfing greens. The Reynolds Plantation in Lake Oconee Village has a whopping 117 holes, divided into six different courses, including the Cuscowilla, which has won awards from Zagat Survey, Golf Digest, Golfweek.com, and GOLF Magazine. Those interested in owning property at one of the courses should check outGolfHomes.com.
There are many fun activities in the lake area: horseback riding, fishing, swimming, boating, camping, picnicking, water-skiing, and wakeboarding. Along its 374 miles of shoreline, Georgia Power has developed three large parks with campgrounds, beaches, and picnic and day-use areas. The company also owns three public boat ramps close to the shore. The lake is home to fourteen full-service marinas as well. The area is also rife with all sorts of wildlife. Lakefront homes are an attractive option for bird watchers, for example, with sightings of a variety of wild birds, including eagles, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and ospreys reported regularly.
Anyone looking for a home for sale with a beautiful lake view and a variety of fun activities nearby should not miss out on Lake Oconee.
Beautiful Lake Oconee is one of Georgia's largest and newest lakes, in fact it is currently the second largest lake in the state. It was formed in 1979 and is located near Greensboro, Georgia just a short drive east from Atlanta. The lake is surrounded by gently rolling hills of the Georgia Piedmont region. The surface area of the lake is 19,050 acres and the shoreline is 374 miles.
For generations, people have recognized the restorative power of the waters of Lake Oconee. More than a century ago, the Creek Indians lived beside a river they called Okoni or "The Great Water." Today those waters form a magnificent lake, renowned for its natural beauty and superb.
