Herrington Lake

Just south of Lexington, Herrington Lake is in Mercer, Boyle and Garrard counties. Herrington Lake is over 35 miles long covering 3500 acres. The lake has been Central Kentucky's favorite water recreational area for many years. You can enjoy all types of water activities on the lake from skiing, fishing boating, or just enjoying the beauty and relaxation
The best access to Herrington Lake from the Lexington metro area is via U.S. Route 27 south to state Route (SR) 152. Take SR 152 west to the lake. SR 34 also provides access to the lakeside from U.S. 27.
From the Louisville area, follow Interstate 64 east to U.S. Route 127. Take U.S. 127 south to SRs 152, 33 or 34.

Royalty's Fishing Camp During warm spells in March,
these tasty panfish can be found in shallow cover in coves near areas where
creeks enter the lake. Much natural cover is present in such locations. This
is a lake of clear, deep water with steep walls. The coves provide anglers
with excellent crappie numbers at this time of year, despite the clarity of
the water.
Persistence and patience are
the recommended approaches to crappie fishing at Herrington. Searching out
submerged logs, trees, stumps and other crappie cover in addition to the cove
areas of the lake will increase the odds of casting into crappie thickets.
Other good locations are the
docks scattered around the lake. Artificial jigs that are white or chartreuse
are reported to produce excellent results in the coves as well as near the
dock covers, and a long casting reel with 4-pound-test line can haul in the
crappie with few problems.

Just south of Lexington, the 1,860
acres of Herrington Lake supply plenty of spring crappie action. This narrow,
winding lake is in Mercer, Boyle and Garrard counties, and for anglers who
take the time to locate the prime crappie habitat, there are plenty of crappie
for the taking.
